29-Jan-1889 Born on this day, Leadbelly, (Hurrdi William Ledbetter), Blues musician, Wrote 'Goodnight Irene', 'The Rock Island Line', 'The Midnight Special,' once jailed for shooting a man dead during an argument over a woman. Died 6th December 1949.
20-Oct-1890 Born on this day, Jelly Roll Morton, US pianist, arranger, bandleader, the first great composer in Jazz, died 10th July 1941.
9-Jun-1891 Born on this day, Cole Porter, singer, composer, one of America's greatest songwriters. Wrote countless classic songs, 'Night And Day', 'I Get A Kick Out Of You', 'Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye'. Died 15th Oct 1964.
15-Jan-1893 Born on this day, Ivor Novello, songwriter & actor. Annual British music awards are named after him. Died 6th March 1951.
6-Mar-1893 Born on this day, Memphis blues artist Walter “Furry” Lewis. He was the first guitarist to play with a bottleneck. He lost a leg in a railroad accident and once supported The Rolling Stones. Joni Mitchell wrote the song ‘Furry Sings The Blues’ after him. Lewis died on September 14th 1981, aged 88.

11-Jan-1895 Born on this day, Laurens Hammond, inventor of the Hammond organ. The sound of the Hammond was used by many rock artists including; Procol Harum, Keith Emerson, Led Zeppelin, The Allman Brothers and The Faces. Hammond died on 3rd July 1973.
15-Aug-1896 Born on this day, Leon Theremin, Russian inventor. Most famous for his invention of the theremin, one of the first electronic musical instruments. He first performed the theremin with the New York Philharmonic in 1928. He died on 3rd November 1993.
8-Sep-1897 Born on this day, Jimmie Rodgers singer, songwriter, the first country music star. Sold over 12 million records and was the first person to be elected into the Country Music Hall Of Fame. (1957 US No.1 single 'Honeycomb' plus over 10 other US Top 40 hits). Rodgers died on 26th May 1933.

10-Sep-1898 Born on this day, Waldo Semon, invented vinyl in 1926, which was used to make LP and 45 records. Died on 26th May 1998 aged 100.
29-Apr-1899 Born on this day, Duke Ellington, composer, bandleader, pianist, died 24th May 1974. Worked with Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, Billie Holiday.
23-Nov-1899 The world's first jukebox was installed at San Francisco's' Palais Royal Hotel.
5-Dec-1899 Born on this day, Sonny Boy Williamson, US blues singer. Van Morrison, The Who, The Animals, Yardbirds and Moody Blues all covered his songs. He died on 25th May 1965.
4-Aug-1901 Born on this day, Louis Armstrong, singer, bandleader, trumpet, (1964 US No.1 single 'Hello Dolly!' 1968 UK No.1 single 'What A Wonderful World'). Died 6th July 1971.
28-Sep-1902 Born on this day, Ed Sullivan, TV host, The Ed Sullivan Singers and Orchestra. Introduced The Beatles and other UK acts to America via his Ed Sullivan TV show. An estimated 73 million viewers watched The Beatles US debut on the show in 1964. Sullivan died on 13th October 1974.
10-Oct-1902 the Gibson Mandolin guitar company was formed. Gibson's first electric guitar the ES-150 was produced in 1936, and in 1946 Gibson introduced the P-90 single coil pickup, which was eventually used on the first Les Paul model made in 1952.
2-May-1904 Born on this day, Bing Crosby, US singer who recorded an estimated 2,600 songs in his lifetime including ‘White Christmas’, which was written by Irving Berlin. Crosby had 317 other hits in the USA. Died of a heart attack on a golf course in Madrid, Spain, on October 14, 1977.
21-May-1904 Born on this day, Fats Waller, US blues singer, died 15th December 1943.
26-May-1904 Born on this day, George Formby, UK singing comedian and ukulele player. He made over 20 films and his best-known song is ‘Leaning On A Lamp Post’. He was made an OBE in 1946, and died on March 6th 1961. Formby influenced George Harrison.
21-Aug-1904 Born on this day, Count Basie, bandleader. Worked with Frank Sinatra as well as his own Count Basie band. Died on 26th April 1984.
17-Feb-1905 Born on this day, Orville “Hoppy” Jones, bass singer and cello player with the Ink Spots, who had a 1955 UK No.10 single with ‘Melody Of Love’. He Died 18th October 1944.
24-Aug-1905 Born on this day, Arthur 'Big Boy' Crudup blues artist. Wrote Elvis' hit 'That's All Right (Mama).' Died of a stroke on 28th March 1974 aged 69.
15-Nov-1905 Born on this day, Mantovani, Orchestra leader, (1953 UK No.1 single 'Moulin Rouge', 1957 US No. 12 single 'Around The World In Eighty Days'). He died on 30th March 1980.
2-Dec-1906 Born on this day, Dr Peter Carl Goldmark, invented the long-playing microgroove record in 1945. The invention went on to revolutionise the way people listened to music. Goldmark was Killed in a car crash on 7th December 1977.
29-Sep-1907 Born on this day, Gene Autry, America's singing cowboy. During his career Autry scored 25 successive Top 10 Country hits. He died on 2nd October 1998 aged 91.
