1 MTV was launched on Aug 1st 1981, the first song played was Buggles 'Video Killed The Radio Star'. The first hour featured videos by Rod Stewart, The Who, Cliff Richard, Split Enz, The Pretenders and Todd Rundgren  
2 The first MTV awards took place at the Radio City Music Hall, New York on 14th Sept 1984. Hosted by Bette Midler and Dan Aykroyd. Video Of The Year was The Cars, 'You Might Think'
3 MTV aired the full 14 minute version of Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' video for the first time on 2nd Dec 1983
4 Kiss appeared without their 'make-up' for the first time during an 1983 MTV show
5 MTV Europe was launched on 1st Aug 1987, with 'Money For Nothing' by Dire Straits, which contained the appropriate line 'I Want My MTV'
6 The very first MTV unplugged show was recorded in New York on 31st Oct 1989 with Squeeze, Syd Straw and Elliot Easton from the Cars. The program was aired on 26th Nov 1989
7 Artists who have recorded unplugged sessions include: Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, Nirvana, Bob Dylan and Sheryl Crow
8 Some of the prizes given away include Jon Bon Jovi's childhood home, Madonna's stage costume, dinner with Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteens guitar, a cruise with Motley Crue and Batman's Batmobile
9 At the 1992 awards, Nirvana's Chris Novoselic knocked himself unconscious after being hit on the head with his guitar after throwing it 'skywards'
